What Parental Discard Is
Parental Discard identifies a pattern of complete, unilateral severance of the primary attachment bond by functioning adults, absent of any documented abuse or neglect. It presents globally within a specific birth cohort with matching language, matching behavior, and a measurable structure. The behavioral markers, criteria, and measurement tools have been developed and defined in detail by M.F. Shaw, MsPSY.
Estrangement is subjective. It is mutual. It is situational and traceable to documented relational failure. Parental Discard is unilateral and measurable. They are not the same condition. They require different language, different understanding, and different responses.
This body of work does not target parents. It does not target adult children. It identifies a condition.
Purpose
Why It Exists
Families across the globe are experiencing the same outcome. Functioning adults with degrees, careers, and professional lives unilaterally sever once-bonded, reciprocal, long-term relationships with their families where no abuse or neglect occurred. The language matches. The behavior matches. The outcome is the same.
No one named it. No one measured it. No one separated it from estrangement. No one applied science to it.
The mental health industry did not identify it. The therapeutic community did not identify it. The estrangement literature does not describe it. No existing model accounts for the scale, the uniformity, or the absence of abuse.
